Topic:
Coping with Disaster - Lessons Learned

Speaker:
Bill Beckham, VP Chief Audit Officer, AgFirst Farm Credit Bank

Summary:
With assets of approximately $30 billion, AgFirst Farm Credit Bank is one of four Farm Credit Banks in the United States. Serving 20 Farm Credit Associations in 15 states and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, Agfirst provides a full-range of funding mechanisms, printing services, and systems development and data center operations for over 80,000 individual customer-borrowers.

Early in the morning of August 13, 2011, a public water main ruptured under the street in front of the Bank's home office in Columbia, SC. Although the break was discovered within 30 minutes, it took several hours to get the water shut off. By that time, approximately 120,000 gallons of water had flooded the sub-basement of the Bank building, destroying equipment and shutting down all electric and HVAC systems for the Bank's offices, data center, and print shop. The Bank's main building was closed for over six weeks while electrical equipment and heating and air systems were rebuilt and replaced.

Despite these problems, AgFirst never failed to provide the essential services its customers needed. In this presentation, you'll learn of proactive steps the Bank had taken prior to the disaster to prepare for a wide-range of disabling events. You'll understand how we worked with key vendors and suppliers to obtain the materials and equipment we needed to keep the business going. You'll also see what was done to manage the relocation of essential personnel and equipment during the six-weeks the main building was off-limits. Finally, you'll find out what we learned from these events and how these lessons will, hopefully, enable us to be better-prepared for the next unforeseen catastrophe. A case study will serve to reinforce the training for attendees.
